Bargaining World Café Sessions: Thank You, Members!

The EEA is pleased to share the successful completion of two Bargaining World Café sessions, held on Friday evening, January 30, and Saturday morning, January 31. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all members and OEA Labor Relations Consultants whose time, engagement, and commitment made these sessions both meaningful and productive.

These sessions were designed to create meaningful dialogue and ensure that member voices are shaping our bargaining priorities. The level of engagement, thoughtfulness, and professionalism demonstrated by participants reaffirmed the importance of using transparent, collaborative processes as we prepare for negotiations.

The feedback gathered during the World Café sessions will directly inform the work of the EEA Negotiations Committee as we move forward. Your input helps ensure that our priorities reflect the real conditions members are experiencing and strengthens our collective voice at the bargaining table.

The Negotiations Committee will be sharing upcoming meeting dates and agendas next week, along with additional information about next steps in the process. Please be on the lookout for further updates.

🎉 Congratulations to Karen Davy, who was selected as the $100 Amazon gift card winner for attending the Bargaining World Café! Thank you, Karen—and thank you to all members who participated.

Together, we are building a stronger, more unified voice for EEA members.

Elyria City Schools Board of Education — First Organizational & Regular Meeting of 2026

The Organizational/Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, was critical as it established the framework and adopted key policies for the upcoming calendar year.

Key Agenda Items and Decisions for 2026:

  • Election of Officers: The agenda included the procedural items and motions for the appointment of the Board President (Mrs. Elaine Seguin) and Vice-President (Mr. Mike Gebhardt) for the calendar year 2026.
  • Oath of Office: Re-elected Board Members Ms. Annie Carstarphen and Mr. Len Howser were administered the Oath of Office by Mayor Brubaker.
  • Governance and Procedure: The Board  adopted the Robert Rules of Order as the official guidelines for all its meetings. Additionally, it was proposed to establish regular board meeting dates on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, with exceptions.
  • Financial Approvals:
    • The Board Service Fund was to be established in the general fund in the amount of $20,000 for paying expenses of the Board of Education during 2026.
    • Motions were on the agenda to approve the 2025-2026 tax budget and forward it to the Lorain County Budget Commission.
    • The Treasurer’s Report summarized the Property Tax Reform – Key Provisions Impacting School Districts, noting that limits on property tax growth are expected to reduce or slow the growth of school district revenues. As a result of the newly enacted property tax reforms, the district’s annual budget is projected to decrease by an additional $750,000 annually.
    • The district was recently notified that reimbursements for Science of Reading training paid to educators would be reduced by $20,000. As a result, the district is required to repay this amount to the state.
  • Legal Appointments: The agenda listed the appointment of multiple law firms to represent the Board of Education and its administration throughout 2026.
  • Personnel Actions: The Board had on its agenda for approval several personnel items, including resignations, appointments of classified and certified staff, a retirement, and an athletic supplemental contract.
  • Regular February 4 Board of Education Meeting – Location Change: The Board of Education has approved a change in location for its regular meeting on February 4. The meeting will be held at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Elyria High School to accommodate an anticipated increase in public attendance. A Big Thank You to Our EEA Members for Supporting Students Through the Season!

As the holidays approach, it’s heartwarming to see our community come together to support those in need and our members of the Elyria Education Association have truly stepped up this year.

In this year’s donation drive, coordinated with The Chronicle‑Telegram’s Not‑Forgotten Box, EEA members donated 240 toys and $1,165.50, reinforcing their commitment to helping students and families facing hardship. See the Chronicle Telegram article.

 Why This Matters

  • Direct impact on students — The toys and funds donated will bring holiday joy and essential resources to children who might otherwise go without.

  • Community spirit in action — This isn’t just about giving; it’s about building a supportive network around our students and their families — showing them they aren’t alone.

  • Teachers and staff leading by example — By contributing generously, EEA members model empathy, generosity, and solidarity. That matters deeply.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you to every educator and staff member who gave (whether toys, money, or simply support). Because of you, this holiday season will be brighter for many children and families in our community. You remind us what it means to care!
